about Castellina
Castellina in Chianti is located in Tuscany region in Italy, in Chianti area, north of the Siena province and bordering Florence province, 18 km. from Siena, 65 km. from Arezzo and 50 km. from Florence and Florence airport.
The hills surrounding Castellina in Chianti sometimes wild, often softly rolling, still indicate that people have been living there, using them for different purposes, at least since the 7th century B.C.
Towns and settlements founded during this period were located along the most important donkey tracks leading from the mountains down to Castellina in Chianti. These villages still prove a communication link between the large Mediterranean Etruscan cities like Vulci, Vetulonia and Roselle, as well as the famous trading' centres of the North such as, for instance, Spina.
Starting from the XIIIth century A.D. Castellina is part of the "Lega del Chianti", (Chianti Alliance), which was a administrative and military alliance within the state of Florence. Thanks to its optimal strategic location which guaranteed the control of all surrounding roads, as well as the whole valley of the Elsa river, Castellina retained its military position.
Nowadays, we can still visit imposing fortress of Castellina, used now by the local town government.
Castellina used to be surrounded by strong walls and smaller towers, only two gates interrupted the defence line. One of these gates pointed towards Siena, the other one towards Florence. Unfortunately both gates were recently completely destroyed during the second World War. Some remains of the defending walls can still be seen today, even if most parts have been integrated into the later construction of buildings and houses in the town.
Castellina in Chianti lost its strategic importance in 1483, when Castellina was retumed to the Medici. Due to the surrender of Siena to the troops of Karl Vin April 1555 and the integration of the village in the State of Siena it became a part of the dominion of the Grand Duchy of Toscany.
The number of farmers increased in this occasion, and many farmhouses were built, as a result of their efforts towards extremely unfavourable conditions, the countryside around Castellina began to transform into the pleasant countryside we are able to admire today.
