About Castiglioncello
Castiglioncello is part of the comune of Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno, in Tuscany, in Italy.
The weather is warm all year round and the beaches are just a few meters outside the village.
Castiglioncello has been built on a promontory dominating the Tyrrhenian Sea and surrounded by pinewoods and hills that fall right down to the sea forming cliffs, coves and, sometimes, also sandy beaches.
Pines, oaks and rocky cliffs covered by vegetation make this region a unique one. The color green prevails, with some white dots, due to elegant villas built on the cliffs and on the hills. This is why, during the XIXth century, an artistic movement called Macchiaioli, with painters like Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini and many others, chose this village, as an inspirational source for their artworks. In fact, Macchiaioli (a sort of derivation of the French impressionist movement) painted everyday life scenes, with a rough style, which did not include design, but only touches of color, exactly as the impressionist painters did.
But the beauty of this area was noticed also in more ancient times by the Romans and Etruscans, as well as by the Medici in the Renaissance and, in more recent times, famous and VIP Italian people (including the writer Luigi Pirandello, the actors Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio Gassman and the director Luchino Visconti) have built their residence here. |
