About Chianti
The hills area, covered with vineyards, surrounding Florence is named Chianti and it gives his name to Italy’s most famous red wine, made of Sangiovese grapes: Chianti wine.
From the XIVth century to 1932 the geographical region of Chianti consisted of three small communities all in the province of Siena: Radda in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti. Nowadays, it is common to describe as Chianti the central part of the Toscana region, even if it shall not be confused with the Chianti wine area or rather with the Chianti-classico sub area.
Actually the new Chianti is a very big area divided in seven smaller areas: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano and Rùfina. It is true that the old Chianti area was then just a little part of the Classico area. Most of the villages that in 1932 were suddenly included in the new Chianti Classico area added immediately or later in Chianti to their name, as – for instance – the village of Greve, which became Greve in Chianti.
Nowadays the Chianti wine route is very popular among tourists coming form all over the world for enjoying the extraordinary landscapes, with lines and lines of vineyards and olive trees and for tasting the Chianti wine, possibly bottled in fiasco, a squat bottle, secured in a straw basket, even if more and more producers prefer to bottle their Chianti wine in normal bordolese bottles.
Thanks to Peretola airport in Florence, which is close to the Chianti area, the wine route in Chianti can be easily organized, taking as a base point a beautiful villa or farmhouse in Chianti to rent and following the lovely Chiantigiana route.
