About Citta Di Castello
Città di Castello is located in Umbria, in the province of Perugia. is situated on a slope of the Apennines, on the upper part of the flood plain of the nearby river Tiber. It is connected to the A1 Rome-Florence highway by the SS 73 from Arezzo.
Even if the town of Città di Castello may have been Etruscan, as origin, the first mentions we have about this city are of Roman origins and it was known as Tifernum Tiberinum or Civitas Tiberina, from the name of the river Tiber.
Nowadays you can visit the medieval city, built of bricks, since it has been very early found that the local sandstone erodes rapidly.
There were not artists that were born in Città di Castello, but both Raphael and Vasari have been working here and, in more recent times, Alberto Burri (a famous Italian abstract sculptor and painter) was born here.
There is also a famous Italian actress who was born here: Monica Bellucci.
A visit to Città di Castello must include a sight of the Duomo (mainly re-constructed and renovated in the XIXth century), to the permanent exhibition dedicated to Alberto Burri and to the Pinacoteca Comunale, an art museum, rich in Renaissance artworks.
