About Montecatini
Montecatini Terme, is located in Tuscany, Italy, in the province of Pistoia, midway between Pistoia and Lucca, not far from Versilia coast.
Montecatini is divided in two different towns: Montecatini Terme, very popular for its spas, frequented by famous musicians and compositors such as Giuseppe Verdi, Pietro Mascagni, Trilussa, Ruggero Leoncavallo and the singer Beniamino Gigli and the writer Luigi Pirandello, and Montecatini Alto, a lovely medieval burg, connected to Montecatini Terme with a funicular which was built at the end of the XIXth century and is still working.
Montecatini dates back to pre-historical times and the first menion of Montecatini, as a free commune, dates to 716 AD. In 1164 it was acquired by the Republic of Lucca and later in the XIVth century the Republic of Florence tried to acquaint it, even if the Lucchese condottieri Castruccio Castracani and Uguccione della Faggiuola strenuously defended Montecatini.
The baths were first built in 1540 and the spas are still working. Every year thousands of tourists and VIPs come to Montecatini for visiting the medieval burg dominating the hills in the surroundings, relaxing in the spas and having sweet promenades in the beautiful green public gardens.
Montecatini Terme is also very well known for shopping: Versace, Armani, Prada and Gucci have elegant boutiques there and, since there are many auctions all the year long, it is also possible to buy antiques and tapestry at excellent prices. |
