About Perugia
Perugia is the capital city of the Umbria region, in Italy, close to the Tiber river. The first mentions of Perugia (as Perusia) date back to 310 or 309 BCE, but it was certainly an ancient Umbrian settlement.
The history of this important Italian city has undergone many vicissitudes and was conquered first by the Romans, then by the Lombards, then – with the consent of Charlemagne – it passed under the popes. During the Guelphs and Ghibellins riots Perugia was faithful to Guelphs families and later – at the beginning of the XVth century – the city of Perugia became a pawn in the Italian wars, passing to Giangaleazzo Visconti, to pope Bonifacio IXth.
At the end of XVIIIth century, was conquered by the French troops and only in 1860, after having been conquered also by the Austrians, the city of Perugia was finally united, along with the rest of Umbria, to the Kingdom of Italy.
The struggles, wars and many vicissitudes we have tried to resume here have left us, at least, a large number of interesting monuments, dating back to different periods, in different styles: the Rocca Paolina, the Cathedral of san Lorenzo, Palazzo dei Priori, the National Gallery of Umbrian art in Middle Ages and Renaissance (with duccio, piero della Francesca, Perugino and Beato Angelico beautiful artworks) , the Basilica of San Domenico, the Church of Sant’Angelo, Fontana Maggiore, the Etruscan Arch (an Etruscan gate with some Roman elements), the Rocca Paolina, the Etruscan Well, the medieval aqueduct just to mention some, among so many interesting sightseeing.
Perugia definitely worth a visit, with its red bricks city centre, well kept and decorated and dotted with nice small shops, cafés and typical restaurants. What is important not to forget is that the main industry in Perugia is about chocolate, mostly because of a single firm, Perugina, whose Baci are exported worldwide. Perugian chocolate is very popular in Italy, and the city hosts a chocolate festival every October/November. |
