About Gubbio
Gubbio is located in Umbria region, in Italy, overlooking Valtiberina, between the valley of the Assino and that of the Chiascio. It is an area rich in beauty sightseeing, dotted with interesting ancient monuments to visit, such as the Abbey of Alfiolo, 12th c., the Abbey of San Benedetto, 12th c., Castle of Castiglione Ildebrandi, 11th c., Castle of Piazza, 12th c., Monastery of San Verecondo at Vallingegno, 12th c., Ruins of the so-called Temple of Diana at Monteleto and the Church of S. Ubaldo.
The first traces of prehistoric settlements in the Gubbio area date back to the middle Paleolithic period, that is to say that we are talking of an extremely ancient and rich in history city. Recently, some sites dating back to the Bronze era have been found in the surroundings of Gubbio.
Gubbio was an important centre for the Umbrians, as is demonstrated by the Eugubine Tablets (3rd - 1st century B.C.), an incredibly remarkable epigraphic trace of pre-Roman Italy. The Eugubine Tablets are seven bronze tablets which offer ritual directions for particular ceremonies, and also give indications as to the organization of the Eugubine city-state.
Gubbio city centre is rich in many archaeological remains, such as the Roman Theatre. After the Roman Empire, Gubbio was destroyed during the Gothic war and was then dominated by Byzantium, from which it freed itself in the 8th c.. During the 11th c. Gubbio passed from the pre-eminent authority of the bishop to a state of self-government.
Both Barbarossa (in 1163) and Henry VIth (1191) granted to Gubbio wide-ranging jurisdiction and privileges which caused strong hostility from neighboring Perugia, which in 1217 defeated Eugubium. 1262 marks the ascendancy of the Guelph families, and is the start of a long period of peace and prosperity, with the exception of the attempt by the Ghibelines to take over the city in 1300.
The population of Gubbio grew, art and craft developed (especially wool craft).
In 1350, Giovanni Gabrielli became lord of the city, but in 1354 Cardinal Albornoz defeated the tyrant, and Gubbio came under the dominion of the church, but with a certain autonomy. 12 years later the town rebelled, but soon afterwards Bishop Gabriele Gabrielli took power, causing a period of internal fighting which ended with the subjection of Gubbio to the Montefeltro family (1384).
The domination of the Counts and Dukes of Urbino gave rise to a period of prosperity when the arts flourished, especially under the dominion of Guidantonio and Federico di Montefeltro.
Federico began the construction in Renaissance style of the Ducal Palace. The people of Gubbio remained faithful to the lords of Urbino even during the brief hegemony of Valentino Borgia (1502) and of Lorenzo dei Medici (1516-1519). The period during which Gubbio was a direct appendage of the Papal States was characterized by economic and political decline.
Afetr having been part of the Cisalpine Republic (1798), then of the Roman Republic (1798-1799), and, from 1808 to 1814, of the Italic Kingdom, finally, in 1860,, Gubbio was included in the kingdom of Italy and afterwards in Umbria region. Gubbio is also rich in his cuisine tradition, with the old days traditional dishes, such as the Easter cheesecake, tagliatelle, grilled meat and – above all – with the marvelous aroma of the white and black truffle.
