About Montespertoli
Montespertoli is a small village, located in Tuscany region, 25 km. from Florence and Florence airport, in Italy. It is in the Chianti area, but not in the Chianti Classico, but in Chianti DOC, along the Chianti wine route.
The area has been fundamental for trading since Etruscan times, but some names of the villages located in this area also remind us of Roman sites: Montagnana, Coeli Aula and Poppiano, for instance.
Later on, Florentine trade with Volterra and Siena was facilitated by the Via Volterrana, which crossed Montespertoli from north to south and joined the Via Francigena, close to Certaldo.
Due to its strategical position, Montespertoli’s territory is dotted with numerous ancient and important castles, built during medieval age, such as Montegufoni castle, dating back to the XIIth century and restored and enlarged in the XVIIth century by the noble Florentine Acciaioli family, Sonnino, Lucardo, Poppiano and Botinaccio.
A visit to the village of Montespertoli must include the Museum of Sacred Art, close to the Roman style Church of San Piero in Mercato, which houses many art-works from medieval age to Renaissance.
The farming tradition of Montespertoli territory has left nowadays many nice town festivals, thorough the year: the Chianti festival on the 1st week of June, the festival of New Wine, on the 1st week November, the white truffle festival, approx. November 15th every year and Vinsanto exhibition, at the end of November.
