About Palermo
Palermo is the chief town of Sicily region and is a busy port city situated on the north-western coast of the island.
Palermo is one of the most leading cities in Europe and, thanks to its very particular history, has many attractions such as interesting museums, churches, markets and restaurants.
You can re-build his history thanks to its name: it is named by Tucidide as Zyz (from the Phoenician word "sys"=flower) who tells us that it was one of the three Punic cities in Sicily.
It was then named Panormos ("all port") by the ancient Greeks, and the Romans maintained the same name, changing the Greek post-fix with the Latin one: Panormus.
The Arabs as well maintained the same name, but with the Arab pronunciation: Balarm.
The definitive name of Palermo was imposed during the Norman empire, which also gave his herald to the city, since it was the capital city of the Norman empire, under Frederick II: the crowned golden eagle in red field, who grasps the S.P.Q.P. (Senatus PopulosQue Panormitanus) writing.
All these different conquerors gave to Palermo an incredible variety of monuments of different styles: from typical Punic to Liberty, from typical Norman-Arab buildings (i.e. the Palermo Cathedral) to baroque Churches (such as Santa Teresa alla Kalsa) and neo-classical theatres, such as the famous Teatro Massimo.
The fountains (in different styles) and the many museums in Palermo all worth a visit, and the Museum of Puppets in particular, since Sicilian Puppets (Pupi Siciliani) are so popular all around the world.
You can enjoy its warm weather, since it is on the same longitude of North Africa, which will accompany you during your visits to Foro Italico, La Cala, Tonnara Bordonaro, Villino Florio (one of the first liberty buildings in Italy), Parco della Favorita, the original Palazzina Cinese (in Chinese style), and the orto botanico (botanical gardens of Palermo).
Most of tourists came from global destinations to explore the beauty of the city with its enjoyable environment, it really worth to spend at least a week in sightseeing Palermo and its surroundings.
