About Scopello
Scopello is located close to Trapani (where there is an airport with daily flights from and to Rome and Milan), in Sicily and it is probably one of the most suggestive and picturesque corners in the Gulf of Castellammare.
Its coats is a great combination of hard rocks and romantic bays with magnificent beaches. These rocks gave his name to the town, which comes from the Greek word Scopelos (high rocks), from the Latin word Scopellum and from Arab "iscubul iactus" (high rocks).
The first documents referring to the tuna fishing in Scopello date back to the XIII century and nowadays you can visit the famous tonnara di Scopello.
The village was born from an Arab farm, named baglio in Sicilian, with the houses that have been built in its surroundings it has grown, along the centuries, to the present size.
His history is deeply bounded both to the different dominations that Sicily has undergone, during the centuries, from Arabs, Greeks and Romans, and - because of his happy position - to the history of pirates, who used Scopello as basis, in the Mediterrenean Sea. a sort of Mediterrenean Tortuga Island!
