About Siena
Siena, like other Tuscan hill towns, was first settled in the time of the Etruscans (c. 900 BC to 400 BC) when it was inhabited by a tribe called the Saina, who gave the name to the city of Siena. The Etruscans were an advanced people who changed the face of central Italy through their use of irrigation to reclaim previously unfarmable land, and their custom of building their settlements in well-defended hill-forts.
Then, at the time of the Emperor Augustus, a Roman town called Saena Julia was founded in the site. Nowadays you can visit many interesting monuments in Siena, mostly dating back to the Renaissance and medieval age: the Siena's cathedral Duomo, with its beautiful artworks by Nicola Pisano, Ghirlandaio, Donatello, Ghiberti anmd Jacopo dalla Quercia, and the Sanctuary of Santa Caterina, incorporating the home of St. Catherine.
The gothinc Palazzo Chigi where today the Music school is located worth a visit as well and - of course - the shell shaped Piazza del Campo, where the popular Palio di Siena takes place during summer. In fact, Siena is shared into different contrade, which compete in the Palio every year.
