About Talamone
Talamone is town on the Monte Argentario in southern Tuscany (Italy). It has been built in the Tuscan area called Maremma and it is a frazione of the larger city of Orbetello.
Talamone was a rich and flourishing city under the Etruscans, and it was the seat of the Roman victory over the Celts, but it was later destroyed by Sulla, since it supported his rival Caius Marius.
As well as Orbetello, Talamon is not mentioned in any document we have, starting from the early Middle Ages, as if it was disappeared.
Siena reactivated the harbour of Talamone during the XIVth c. and Talamone became the principal maritime port for the state of Siena, although the distance to Siena is about 100 Km.
The Sienese built the strong fortress called "Rocca di Talamone" which dominates the city and the surroundings and is visible from far away, from the Tirrenian sea.
In 1557, under the local seignors (the Aldobrandeschi family) it became part of the Spanish puppet State of Presidi.
During the XIXth century Talamone has been the seat of a famous episode of the Giuseppe Garibaldi's Mille expedition: Giuseppe Garibaldi’s soldiers stopped and rested in the city in order to resupply of water and weapons.
Nowadays Talamone has a particularly fascinating atmosphere and tourists come from all over the world, for visiting its fortress and on the Rocca di Talamone and its lovely marina.
