About Umbria
Umbria is a region in Italy, located south of Tuscany and very similar to Tuscany for its views and country landscapes. Umbria is divided in two provinces: Perugia, which is its capital city, and Terni.
The region name comes from the Umbri a protohistoric (VIth century BC) tribe who has located in this area.
From VIIth century to Vth century BC, the Etruscans, chief enemies of Umbrian population, pushed Umbrians towards the Appennines and conquered the area, even if the defeat of Umbrian seemed not to be definitive.
It was during the Roman invasion that both Etruscans and Umbrians were erased from the region.
After the defeat of the Roman Empire by the Byzantines, it was the Longobard who founded the duchy of Spoleto, which covered almost completely what today we call Umbria region.
Umbria is characterized by an extraordinary countryside, with green woods, vineryards and beautiful fields enriched by the amazing surroundings of the Trasimeno Lake.
Right in the heart of these green valleys and hills, admist an incredibly relaxing atmosphere, you will discover so many suggestive small towns to visit: Aussie ( birthplace of Saint Francesco), Gubbio, Citta di Castello, Spoleto, Oevieto just to name some, and - of coursr - Perugia, where, every year in September/October you will be able to assist an extraordinary Chocolate Festival. |
