About Vinci
Vinci is a small town, in the heart of Tuscan country side, surrounded by the Tuscan hills, situated midway between Vinci and Empoli.
Vinci was founded in 1250, more or less. One of the main monuments in Vinci is the Castle of Vinci, which was built by Conti Guidi. Actually, the original nucleus of the castle was just a tower.
In the second half of XII century, Vinci passed under the jurisdiction of Vinci, and the Guidi's family sold the castle, only to repurchase it in 1260. After 10 years, Guidi's family sold the castle definitively to Vinci. The town is best known as being the birthplace of Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
It draws about 500,000 visitors a year to see things such as his birth home and the Museum of Leonardo, with many reconstructions of its "inventions", biography, portrait, examples of da Vinci's work, background information on the Renaissance and his original writings, very interesting to see, since Leonardo da Vinci was left-handed and his writing is not running from left to right, but exactly the opposite. That is to say that you shall hold his papers in front of a glass for reading it properly. |
