To discover the soul of Palermo, you must go to its world-famous markets! The oriental atmosphere of this place will make you forget you are in Italy: as most of these markets were born in the period of Arab domination, they still maintain some characteristics of the typical North African markets. The desks and the baskets of goods invade the streets, the sellers shout to passers-by to catch their attention, thousands of colors flood the streets and all kinds of perfumes fill the air of one of the most beautiful Sicilian cities. Would you really leave Palermo without having seen such a place? Discover where to find the most beautiful and well-known markets in the city and immediately organize your trip to Palermo! It's inside its ancient markets, called Ballarò, Capo, Vucciria and Borgo Vecchio, that Palermo reveals its authentic spirit. Ballarò is a market located near the central station and the church of Casa Professa, where hundreds of marriages are celebrated every year. Located in the Albergheria district, this is the largest and oldest market in the whole city. In fact, it dates back to the 10th century, a period in which the Arabs had commercial relations with an Indian village called Balhara. As the spices and merchandise coming from these distant lands were sold here, its name became "Ballarò". Its charm has remained unchanged over time and it continues to attract dozens of buyers, thanks to the cries of the local sellers and to the appealing stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables called "abbanniate". The market is open all day long and it offers some tasty foods, such as pianelle (chickpea flour fritters), crocchè (potato croquettes) and sandwiches with spleen. Actually, this typical street food is perfect to accompany a walk around the city! Although the market is open 365 days a year, the best time to visit it is on Sunday morning: Ballarò becomes a huge second-hand shop where you can make a lot of great deals! Instead, Vucciria is the market that inspired a famous painting made by Guttuso. It takes its name from the ancient meat market called "la Bucciria" and it is located between Piazza Caracciolo and the surrounding streets. This is the most peculiar market, as the goods are displayed on special marble slabs called "balate" put on the stalls. There is a triumph of colors and scents: yellow hanging lemons, red dried tomatoes, silver sardines and the pleasant scents of spices will turn your visit into a memorable experience! Mercato del Capo derives its name from the neighbourhood "Caput Seracaldi", which is the Latinization of an Arabic name. It is the fish market par excellence and it extends from Porta Carini to the magnificent area of the Cathedral. The numerous stalls crowding it make it difficult to pass between them, but each of them offers all kinds of delicacies! Fruits, vegetables, fish, fine meats ... this market has everything you will need. Finally, Borgo Vecchio market is located in a popular neighborhood standing in sharp contrast with the bourgeois districts of Politeama and Libertà. The liberty-styled buildings, the splendid port and the colors of the stalls create a unique environment where every visitor loves to get lost. Looking for a holiday rental in Palermo? In fact, this place in the Noto Valley is full of seventeenth-century monuments and each one preserves its uniqueness. The splendid Villa Comunale, Chiesa del Gesù and many other buildings located in the neighborhoods of San Giorgio and San Giacomo were built after the earthquake and are perfect examples of this particular artistic style. 4- Palazzolo Acreide Palazzolo Acreide was born in the heart of the Iblei Mountains and its historic center was literally split in two following the earthquake. The old part, of medieval origins, overlooks a magnificent Greek Roman theater in stone, while the "new town", rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth century, contains numerous baroque buildings. Among these, you will find some important churches such as those of San Sebastiano and of Saints Peter and Paul, which have richly decorated facades and a truly majestic appearance. 5- Noto Noto is also called "the Capital of the Baroque" and it's not difficult to understand the reason after you taking a tour of its center! The city rises on top of a hill immersed in the typical Sicilian countryside and it dominates the valley with its magnificent monuments. In fact, the center includes a set of beautiful seventeenth-century buildings that present a uniform artistic style. All the historic and religious buildings own harmonious shapes and beautiful golden shades, especially during the day when the sunlight shines on their facades. In fact, this charming example of Baroque art perched on a Iblei Mountain presents some magnificent 17th century churches, such as the Church of San Giorgio, the Church of Carmine, the Church of St. Mary of Bethlehem, the Church of San Pietro or the Cathedral of San Giovanni. Looking for a villa for rent near Modica? Choose Villa Terranova! 8- Ragusa The last stop of a Val di Noto tour is Ragusa, a large city in Southern Sicily. The earthquake of 1693 completely transformed its center, causing its division in the districts of Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla. The typical characteristics of the Baroque style are perfectly summarized in some of its religious buildings, such as the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Church of San Giorgio and the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, as well as in the noble palaces of Palazzo della Cancelleria, Palazzo Bertini and Palazzo Cosentini. What makes Ragusa so splendid is the union between the breathtaking charm of the historic center and the countless beautiful landscapes, enclosed within an unspoilt reserve between the Iblei Mountains and the Irminio river. There are few other places in the world that conserve the charm of the Amalfi Coast. Romantic, poetic and colorful, the "Costiera" is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Italian and foreign tourists, who crowd its streets at any time of the year. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and includes thirteen localities, which are Amalfi, Atrani, Praiano, Ravello, Maiori, Minori, Vietri on Sea, Positano, Scala, Tramonti, Furore, Cetara and Conca dei Marini. Once there, it is difficult to choose which villages you should visit first during your tour, especially if it doesn't last more than a few days. Also, you must consider that the "Amalfitana" road connecting all the villages is very busy in high-season periods such as summer. It is not easy to park you car either: parking lots are few, difficult to reach and they can cost up to € 3/hour. This is why planning your itinerary to perfection is what can make the difference during your holiday, which can turn it from a nightmare to a beautiful daydream. We suggest a list of five beautiful views you absolutely need to see, as they will surely leave you breathless. You do not need to stop in each town getting out of your car to wander in some unknown village streets, because finding the right places to capture your dreamy pictures will be enough to make your trip memorable. 1- Ravello Located 365 meters above the sea level, Ravello is the highest town of the whole Coast. Perched on a cliff overlooking the entire gulf, it offers a breathtaking view of Maiori, Minori and Salerno. The sea is 20 minutes away by car, but it can also be reached by foot taking one of the splendid pedestrian streets with steep staircases connecting Ravello to the beach of Minori, which also offer some breathtaking views. The most famous view can be seen from the garden of Villa Rufolo, a splendid park overlooking the bell tower of the cathedral of Ravello and the entire Gulf of Salerno. In fact, what really distinguishes Ravello from all the other towns are not its monuments, but its stunning panorama. No other place offers such views! 2- Positano This suggestive village separates the Amalfi Coast from the Sorrento Peninsula. The "vertical city" is where you can enjoy some shopping in the lovely stores selling precious linen clothes. The main square and the magnificent church located near the beach can be reached getting down the typical narrow streets connecting the upper part of the city to the beach. A visit to the village of Positano is a wonderful experience, but can also be very tiring. Therefore, you can also choose to just stop for a few minutes on the sides of the road coming from Conca dei Marini to appreciate a magnificent panorama, which will nevertheless give you some splendid emotions. 3- Fiordo di Furore The deep rocky inlet that takes the name of "Fjord of Furore" is a real natural wonder. An old arched bridge stands over a small beach overlooking a natural pool, which makes the view even more magical. Unfortunately, the beach is no longer reachable on foot, because a fire ruined the stone staircase. However, those who choose to take a boat trip can still admire it from a beautiful point of view! 4- Villa Comunale in Vietri sul Mare Vietri sul Mare is the first town of the Amalfi Coast and it can be easily reached from Salerno. Its charm is enhanced by the wonderful glazed ceramics that adorn walls and streets, which are the symbol of the ancient craft tradition that distinguishes this center. In fact, the narrow streets of Vietri present dozens of local shops selling dishes, souvenirs and other gift ideas in ceramics that can be offered to friends and relatives. The most beautiful glimpse of Vietri is in "Villa Comunale", a large park with colorful decorations looking like Gaudì's masterpieces in Barcelona. The stairway covered with brightly-colored pieces of ceramic snaking above the sea offers a very special view to all its visitors. 5- Amalfi's Dome The Costiera takes its name from the town of Amalfi, the ancient Maritime Republic that still conserves a stunning look. The main square is a place you must see: bars, typical restaurants, pottery shops and historic hotels surround the famous steps of the Cathedral of Amalfi, a pearl of Romanesque architecture with a unique Arab taste. The polychrome decoration, the gilded stuccoes and the pointed arches embellish its majestic façade, which always amazes those who admire it from below. Are you looking for a holiday rental? It's here that some of the main monuments of the city are located, that is to say the Dome, Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Tarugi and Palazzo Contucci. While the Cathedral of Sant'Assunta is the major place of worship in town, the other palaces are magnificent noble buildings. The most important one is Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall), which was commissioned by Cosimo I De'Medici during the Florentine dominion and presents the wonderful Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower). Other buildings you should see are the Medici Fortress, which is an ancient castle built in 1261, the Church of Sant'Agostino and the Torre di Pulcinella, a bell tower with a statue of Pulcinella beating on the bell which is shrouded in mystery, as nobody knows the reason why this Neapolitan symbol is put there. After taking some photographs of these splendid monuments, why don't you stroll a little in the elegant "Corso"? The charming road crossing the whole city from Porta al Prato to the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi is where you will find restaurants, bars and many shops to purchase some souvenirs of your fantastic trip! Another symbol of the city is the Church of San Biagio, a chapel located at the foot of the hill and immersed in the typical countryside. The church and its dome can be reached by walking along a path adorned with cypress trees, which also conserves an incredible charm. You'll find yourself in a fabulous place, surrounded by a lovely landscape that seems stolen from the background of a nice postcard. Otherwise, if you'd prefer spending your day in an interesting museum, you can't miss the famous Torture Museum, the Civic Museum or the Pinacoteca Crociani, some art galleries that contain works made by important Sienese and Florentine painters. If you wish to visit Montepulciano, one day is not enough. Take some time to discover the beauties of the historical center or the neighboring villages and enjoy your holiday to the fullest! You can walk along the countryside streets adorned with cypress trees, cross the wheat fields, immerse yourself in the authentic Tuscan beauty or visit the lake of Montepulciano to practice some bird watching. Also, you have the unmissable opportunity to take part to a memorable wine tour inside a local "agriturismo" and taste some food specialties in a good typical restaurant! Some of the dishes you must try are the pappardelle pasta with a meat sauce, the croutons with livers and the pore mushrooms with "ciaccia" bread, which can be accompanied by a glass of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, one of the best red wines in the world.
